This is going to be a hard one for me because I’m pretty good at remembering what books were about, especially if I liked them. However, I’ve read enough books in my lifetime that I’m sure I can scrape enough together for a list. Let’s do this!
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, and you can find out more about it and link up here.
Just looking at my bookshelf right now, I can tell you the plot of pretty much any book in decent detail. However, there’s one big exception: Amos Daragon, porteur de masques by Bryan Perro. I remember this being my favourite book in grade three, but I remember nothing. There was a town called Bratel-la-Grande, everyone hated shapeshifters, and Amos got a mask with a stone in it that gave him wind (?) powers. Oh, and some asshole dude got a tattoo on his face that told everyone how much of an asshole he was at the end. That’s it. That’s all I remember. (I’m actually planning to re-read this soon because I thought I’d lost it ages ago, but apparently I haven’t, and I’d love to see it from seventeen-year-old me’s perspective. I’ll keep you posted.)
I also have memory issues with the entire Shadowhunters saga. That’s not necessarily about not remembering plot points, it’s just about not remembering which book they happened in. They all blur together a bit.
Additionally, can someone remind me what happened in Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor? I can remember what happened in Daughter of Smoke and Bone and I can kind of remember what happened in Dreams of Gods and Monsters, but all I can remember from Days of Blood and Starlight is there was a rapey dude and everyone spent a lot of time in the desert. Apparently I gave it four stars on Goodreads?
So I gave Windwitch by Susan Dennard a four stars on Goodreads as well. And I also can’t remember what happened it it! There was wind and… witches? Okay, I’m exaggerating a little here. I remember that Aeduan and Iseult were travelling together at one point? Or maybe for most of the book? And Safi was… somewhere? Oh, and Merik’s sister was a thing! And he was hanging out with someone who was trans! Yeah, that’s all I’ve got.
I think I might just have a problem with middle volumes because I don’t have many memories of The Rose Cycle by Marie Lu either. I can remember what happened in the first book and the last book, but I try and remember this one and I’m just like… things… happened… I think? Yeah, no. Gonna need some prompts.
I’m not sure if I have spotty memories of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams or I have good memories of Douglas Adams being Douglas “My Books Are Awesome and Also Super Random” Adams. Jury’s out.
I can assure you, though, that I remember nothing of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, also by Douglas Adams, which is weird, because I remember a lot about the sequel, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul. Maybe it’s because the sequel had Thor destroying Heathrow, which is something I would sell my soul to see happen, especially if it was directed by Taika Waititi.
I read I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga a year or two ago and really loved it, because it’s me and there were serial killers and I’m weird and think that’s a point in a book’s favour. But my memory is just – serial killer’s son – there is a serial killer – also his girlfriend is black and they’re doing The Crucible. Why would I remember the detail about the school play but not ANYTHING about the serial killer? Have you ever seen a school play? Serial killers are so much more interesting! (I’m currently in a school play, so I’m an Expert on This.)
Here is some shame. I am a Star Wars nerd, and I cannot for the life of me remember what happened in Ahsoka by E.K. Johnson. Double shame, because Ahsoka was one of ten-year-old Leo’s all-time favourite characters! I remember closing the book and wanting to be a Jedi, and I remember that she got white lightsabers with crystals she had purged or something of their Sith-ness (which is perfect for who she is, see end of The Clone Wars season 5), but that’s IT. No, Ahsoka! WHY CAN’T I REMEMBER YOU STORY????
So those are some books I apparently liked but? Did? I? What if these memories were just planted in my head by aliens? What if aliens are trying to get me to recommend these books without having to actually make me read them? 100% would happen guarantee.
What are some books you remember nothing about, but loved? And are there any books you know that, for long as you live, you will never forget?
